Our First Century

Altar Window
Organized in 1902 as a mission of St. Andrew's Church, The Church of the Holy Comforter was the first church in the diocese named to honor the Holy Spirit. The original site of the church was the corner of Grove Avenue and Rowland Street in what is now called the Fan District. The church was granted independent status by the Diocesan Council in 1903. In 1920, a parish hall was built adjoining the church.

In 1947, the growing congregation decided to move west with the city and purchase property at 4819 Monument Avenue. The first structure to appear at this address was the new parish hall, where the congregation held services, Sunday School classes, and other activities beginning on August 27, 1950. Construction of the new church building began in January 1957. Stained glass windows from the old church became part of the new church and remain a symbol of continuity. The parish's first service in its new home took place on September 20, 1958. The consecration of the church followed the retirement of the mortgage in 1973.

Situated at the corner of Monument Avenue and Staples Mills Road, the Church building is an impressive structure that is as well built as it is beautiful. The chancel renovation done a few years ago is the first major structural change to the building, and represents a change in worship practice, rather than a flaw in the original design or construction. During the renovation of the chancel, the rest of the building was patched, painted, and revitalized.

For the past few years, we have refurbished both the church building and the parish house. They are the first significant changes and refurbishment done since the church was built.
